Althoughthe process of decorating cloth through the process of batik is foundin several regions in Africa or India and even in some South East Asiancountries, the batik of Indonesia is unique and unequaled.
IndonesianBatik is made in several regions, but the center of the art is CentralJava, in cities like Yogyakarta, Solo, Cirebon, Pekalongan andIndramayu.
The pride of Indonesians to wear batik till the present day has preserve this art of textile.
Thebeauty of Batik is a tribute to the patience, creativity of the womanof Java, the main island of Indonesia. Credit should be also given tomen who prepare the cloth and handle the dyeing and finishing process.
Batikis generally thought of as the most quintessentially Indonesiantextile. Motifs of flowers, twinning plants, leaves buds, flowers, birds, butterflies, fish, insects and geometric forms are rich insymbolic association and variety; there are about three thousandrecorded batik patterns.
Thepatterns to be dyed into the the clothe are drawn with a canting, awooden ‘pen’ fitted with a reservoir for hot, liquid wax. In batikworkshops, circles of women sit working at clothes draped over frames, and periodically replenish their supply of wax by dipping their cantinginto a central vat. Some draw directly on the the cloth from memory;others wax over faint charcoal lines. (Taken by Nebu Sauyun)
